The one exception being Nishimiya, but of course Ueno blames her for Ishida getting into this condition in the first place, so of course she's going to be extra mad at her. But from her perspective, all of these "friends" that are coming to visit him are the people who just turned their backs on him and are only now inserting themselves back into his life now that he's been hospitalized. She just wants things in life to go smoothly for everyone, regardless of the details (like hanging out with Nishimiya who she hates).Īnd yeah, it's a pretty bitchy move to hog Ishida to herself during his hospitalization. Neither of them pan out, but at least she's trying. Then she tries to get everyone on good terms in the super dramatic bridge scene. First she tries to reunite Ishida with his childhood friends. Not to mention, Ueno tries to be the peace maker multiple times in the series. Nishimiya's entire character arc revolves around the faults that Ueno brings to light. She doesn't sugar coat things, and she is really good at reading people. She wants Nishimiya to stand up for herself! She has an aggressive way of showing it, but she does want Nishimiya to be true to herself. She gets mad that Nishimiya keeps apologizing when there is zero reason for her to apologize. She gets mad at Nishimiya who is hiding her true feelings, and she is 100% right about it. Not to mention, a lot of points Ueno makes are true. Kawai is just a narcist who has never redeemed herself in the slightest bit. At least Ueno is honest, and she knows she's a bitch and she can reflect on her own faults. Hundred times this! The movie is actually treating her nicer, in the manga Ishida's words (which were slightly different) to her on the bridge reflected my own feelings about her. Basically a "This is how good I look even when I'm not at my best" What's more, is that she even downplays it as "Oh, I just didn't have time to get ready this morning" (which is probably a lie anway). ![]() We can infer Kawai is doing the same thing, except it's to get everyone's attention. We know Nishimiya changed her hairstyle to get Shoyo's attention. ![]() I think her character is summed up pretty well in the scene where she changes her hairstyle. Dropping him instantly when it becomes inconvenient for herself, and then picking him back up again after the hospitalization. Inserting herself into Ishida's life when he's starting to become relevant again (when his picture starts getting passed around the school and when Mishiba takes interest in him). It's why she's always yelling, always trying to make a scene, always playing the victim. Kawai tries to make everything about herself. It was always a bit strange to me why Ueno was the one who kept the X the longest. The manga fleshes both characters out more (as well as the entire cast) and while I feel like Ueno is redeemed in the end, Kawai is the one character who got zero sympathy from me. She is a complete narcissist who not only lies to make herself look better, but she's so delusional that she actually starts to believe her own lies. Unlike Kawai who doesn't care about Nishimiya, she only cares about herself and her own self image. She doesn't pretend to like her, but she is willing to put up with her for the sake of Ishida. ![]() ![]() She genuinely cares about Ishida, and even though she doesn't like Nishimiya she tries to extend an olive branch regardless. How can ANYONE vote for Ueno? Ueno is a bitch, but she is straight forward about it.
